Ever had a situation where you’re playing an FPS game and somehow you’re stuck wondering: “what if they made a first person action game but with swords and spears instead?” You might also think that that idea wouldn’t be executed the way you thought… Well you’re probably right. If any game company has ever come close into making a skill-based, hand-to-hand (or rather blade to blade) combat FPS game, it’s name would be Torn Banner Studios. This is the game company that made (in my opinion) one of the best sword fighting games ever and it’s name is Chivalry: Medieval Warfare
Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is basically a hand to hand FPS combat game where you play as knights, archers, vanguards … Basically, classes in the medieval times. It doesn’t look so convincing at first but don’t let it fool you. This is one of the funnest games I’ve played and probably one of games that you should get in your Steam library.
But let me be clear about this game. Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is ALL about skill and timing. You have to learn to block at the right time, strike at the right place, manage your stamina and distance between you and your opponent and if you don’t do any of these things, well… let’s just say things aren’t going to end well for you.
The controls are hard to master at first and you might be frustrated because of dying all the time but don’t let that stop you. Keep playing and you’ll get the hang of it and when you do, the game WILL reward you. Once you learn how to wield a blade, you’ll feel like a true soldier ready to go to battle and kill your enemies.
There are 4 classes that you can choose from, each with it’s own play style. There’s the Archer, Knight, Man-at-Arms and the Vanguard. Each of these classes have their own ‘perks’ so to speak. The Man-at-arms moves faster than other classes and has the ability to dodge, while the knight has more health than other classes. These classes each have different types of weapons from spears and arrows to sledgehammers giving you a wide variety of play styles to choose from. And when 32 players join in on a game, it’s hard to get bored of Chivalry.
The controls aren’t hard to master and in a way, the buttons are put exactly where they should be. Scrolling downwards on your mouse will do a stab move while scrolling upwards will do a vertical slash. The gameplay mechanics in Chivalry is what stands out, the controls are simple enough for anyone to pick it up quickly, but one wrong button pressed at the wrong time and you’ll be dead. That’s the beauty of this game. As I said before, this game is ALL about skill and timing.
It also helps that Chivalry: Medieval Warfare looks, and sounds as good as it plays. The graphics are gorgeous, especially for an indie game. Various maps take you through different settings from castles built on the side of a volcanoes to a Colosseum type of arena which makes for the most hectic and messy free-for-all games. Sound design is also good in this game, a blocked attack sounds like what it would in the movies and there’s an extremely satisfying feeling hearing the sound of someone being decapitated. Oh yes, this game is violent and full of gore which adds to the realism of it.
Chivalry Medieval Warfare is a game that is worth buying, especially since it goes on sale quite often on steam which means plenty of people will be playing it. There are dozens among dozens of servers to play all ranging from Singaporean servers all the way to America, this way EVERYONE gets to play with minimal lag.
To sum up this review, Chivalry is definitely one of the must-haves on your PC, its violent, gorey, skill-based and has amazing visuals guaranteed to keep you playing for hours on end. And once you get the hang of it, you won’t want to stop playing.
